Keokuk Main Street
Keokuk, Iowa

Project Description:

Reconstruction and widening of a 5 lane section of US HWY 218 through downtown Keokuk. Project includes storm sewer improvements, right-of-way restoration, traffic control/phasing for construction, pavement markings, pavement widening and new traffic signalization systems at selected intersections. The existing highway paving was determined to have deteriorated to the point where it was necessary to replace the existing asphalt and brick pavement with a new 10” PCC surface over a 12” aggregate base. Also to improve traffic flow a new center left turn lane was added and driveways were reconstructed.

The project is being funded from several different sources including the FHWA, Iowa Department of Transportation, and local government. To work with these funding sources and to meet the needs of the community the project was broken into two phases. Phase I, a 1.9 mile stretch, heading northwest from downtown. Phase II a 0.5 mile stretch running through the middle of downtown. The storm sewer impovements will aid in improving drainage on the roadway as well as helping to separate sanitary and storm water flows. The project will be constructed under continuous two way traffic.
