Highlights: Consulting Engineers Engineering Excellence Award and Portland Concrete Association and Iowa Department of Transportation Awards.
Project Description:
The City of Iowa City needed to convey pedestrian traffic from downtown to parking sites across Ralston Creek while maintaining the historical character of the neighborhood. Design expertise provided by Shoemaker & Haaland included conceptual stage comparison of materials based on cost, maintenance and aesthetic appeal. Final selection of precast concrete included use of aggregates and sands that give the structure a standstone appearance. Coupled with the parabolic arch design, the structure blends architecturally into the buildings of the surrounding neighborhood.
Responsibilities:
Shoemaker & Haaland provided services ranging from conceptual selection of materials to final design and layout. Construction inspection services were also provided. Working with the City and Iowa Precast Concrete, a precast bridge was constructed that could be assembled with minimal disruption to Ralston Creek and neighboring businesses.
