Project Description: Woodlawn was originally plotted to be the neighborhood where the Governor’s mansion was to be placed. Designed on a site line axis with the State Capitol Building, the historic district is nine blocks east of the Pentecrest. Unfortunately, the Capitol moved from its location in Iowa City in 1856 to Des Moines and the Governor’s house was never built. During the next 10 – 20 years, however, beautiful homes were built here. Today the stone curb and granular drives still exist. Our company was asked to assist the neighborhood in the reshaping of the street grades to achieve a better drainage and find a more suitable rock surface. We met with the residents several times and discussed options. Maintaining historic integrity was of utmost importance. The end result was a grading plan that was more effective using new stone curb in areas and natural brown colored limestone aggregate. | |
